Josi Chosen as Preds New Captain
How dare they give the "C" to someone not named Pernell-Karl Sylvester Subban?! What were they thinking?
Totally kidding, everybody. Don't get upset. Sure, I wanted P.K. to get that shiny new letter on his sweater, but only because he's literally my favorite player in the game.
Today, the Nashville Predators named Roman Josi the next captain, and the eighth in franchise history. They also named Ryan Ellis the associate captain while Filip Forsberg, Ryan Johansen and Mattias Ekholm will all serve as alternate captains. In my opinion, there's probably not a more deserving guy than Roman on this roster. Josi is the perfect package of skill, likability and commitment to the community, and jaw-dropping good looks (you'll have to do your own google search for that link, ya weirdos). If we're being honest, that last one probably helps boost that likability factor.
Enough of the jokes and funny stuff. I want to talk about the things that make this decision the right one. Josi is a home-grown defenseman, just like Shea Weber was when he was given the "C". David Poile has made it a habit to draft really, really good defenseman and turn them into stars. Josi, Ellis, Ekholm and Weber are all great examples of that. Josi has definitely grown into quite the player. He led the defensive corps in points last year with 49 and has reached the 40-point mark in each of the last four years. The talent is there and it's abundant. He's one of the best D-men in the league and this title should help him get even more attention nationally.
During the press conference, Josi spoke about how honored he was to receive the captaincy and heaped praise on the two previous captains, Mike Fisher and Shea Weber. He seemed to be quite humble about it, saying "it's something I definitely never dreamed about." That humility shows that he truly learned from his predecessors, as those guys were never going to get loud and braggadocious about things going on in the dressing room.
I'm fully supportive of the choice for another reason: Josi is a good guy! One of my favorite things about hockey players is their endless desire to give back to the children and fans in their cities. You don't have to look very hard to see what Roman's done in the community during his seven years in Nashville. He's a member of the Best Buddies of Tennessee. They are an organization that supports and mentors children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He's also one of the guys who goes with P.K. to various children's hospitals just to brighten those kids' day. It's so heartwarming to see millionaire athletes show people that they care about people. Often times, athletes can be looked at as self-centered, egotistical demons. But Roman Josi is quite the opposite. And the city of Nashville absolutely adores him on and off the ice.
With our newly-minted captain, and more playoff experience than ever before, I can't wait to see what these guys are able to accomplish at 501 Broadway. I will be rooting for Roman Josi and the 22 other guys on the team, no matter how much I personally wish P.K. was the captain.
